The Levitical Church
(Written by Dr. Rudi Swanepoel)

God’s plan for His church has always been to form a royal priesthood before His throne. (1 Pet 2:9). This is not a mere New Covenantal emphasis. In fact even before the Lord met with Moses on Sinai and established the Law, He desired to have His people be a “kingdom of priests”. (Ex. 19:6). This concept of a holy priesthood really comes to life when we consider the Hebrew word “Levite”. It literally means “to be attached / to twin / to unite”. A Levitical people, true to the definition of the name, are a people attached to the Lord. A people entwined with the Holy Spirit, ministering in the very presence of the Lord. It is the Levites that carried the Ark of the Covenant, the contact point of the Glory and presence of the Lord.

Just when the Lord prepared Israel to finally enter the Promised Land, after 40 years of wilderness travel, He ordered the Levites to carry the Ark out in front of the people. This is truly the position of a new breed of Christian in the Church today. Men and women who do not lag behind the presence of the Lord, but in fact ushering in the Glory of God wherever they may go! A people burdened with the “weight (glory)” of the Living God.

The Character of the Levitical Church

Carriers of the Glory – They are responsible to carry the Glory of God (Jos. 3:3)

Quick to Obey – They are quick to obey Divine direction when they see and experience the presence of the Lord in a given situation.

Trailblazing – They boldly step into new territories where they have not been before (Jos. 3:4)

Cutting Edge - They always seem to be a step in front of the rest, a true cutting edge Christian. (Jos. 3:4)

Sanctified – They are a people set apart for a special, holy purpose and they are acutely aware of that purpose. (Jos. 3:5)

Levitical Worship
We were made to worship the Living God. The Greek word for worship is proskuneo. It literally means a) to bow down and b) to kiss. Put the two together and you have a person who bows before God in humbleness and kiss Him in intimacy! True worship is flowing from the Levitical Church. Worship that is both humble and intimate in nature! Let us always attach ourselves to the Lord, being entwined with the Holy Spirit and remembering that if we are in Him and He is in us, we will bear much fruit because without Him we can do nothing!
