Clogged Christians

(Written by Dr. Rudi Swanepoel)

The sun was beating down on us as we raced down the street. Summer in Sunny South Africa can be brutal to most, but to a 12-year-old it is paradise. The ultimate adventure is to be outside. Back then we did not have computers. The one TV channel we had was on the air during the evening only. We were racing our bicycles down to the park. We were going to spend the afternoon swimming in the muddy water of the park pond.

“They call it Dry Ice” a friend said when we got to the park. “They use it to keep ice cream cold.” (I have no idea what the “proper”American would call it). He put in into a plastic container to “save” it for later. It was our first experience with Dry Ice. We were not 5 minutes in the water when it happened. The Dry Ice exploded! I thought it was a bomb. My friend’s plastic container was ripped into pieces. The vapor of the Dry Ice could not escape! It was trapped inside and that caused the explosion.

I learned a valuable lesson that day: Do not “trap” Dry Ice inside! Today many Christians trap something much more potent than Dry Ice inside their spirit. The power of God is awesome! It is dynamic and explosive. We read of it’s the effect on the lives of people in Acts 2. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit. It changed them, never to be the same again. For days and weeks to come they marveled at what the Lord was doing on the inside of them. Then they “trapped it” in Jerusalem. Soon anyone who wanted to be touched by God had to go to Jerusalem. Everyone spoke about the awesome things God was doing in Jerusalem. Well, we all know what happened: The Lord dispersed the believers by allowing persecution to hit the church. The power of God needed to be shared with the world. That is why the Lord sent the Holy Spirit in the first place.

Paul says: “We have this precious treasure in earthen vessels.” The power of God is our greatest treasure. It is more valuable than anything we can own here on earth. Having said that we also should know of the potential danger of the power of God. Power is always potent. Keep it to yourself any it can be destructive; too hot to handle. We received the power of the Holy Spirit to share it with others!

The Dry Ice caused damage to the plastic container because it was “trapped” inside. Do not make the same mistake in principle with the power of God in your life. Release it to flow through you. Do not put a lid on your life! Share the Gospel and Gladness of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Speak it, live it, breathe it and share it! That is the only way you can keep the power of God in your life.
